The spirit of the Coast Survey was defined by its first two superintendents. Jefferson created the "Survey of the Coast," as it was then called, in response to a need for accurate navigational charts of the new nation's coasts and harbors. The Office of the Coast Survey (1807 - present) founded in 1807 by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of Commerce Albert Gallatin, is the oldest scientific organization in the U.S. We are aware of two examples in institutional collections at Stanford University and the Washington State Library. The current example was issued by Carlile Pollock Patterson and Julius Erasmus Hilgard in 1877, printed in 1889 and corrected to 1890. Oriented with northwest at the top and centered on Hilton Head Island, the chart covers from the Vernon River to St. coast between Savannah, Georgia and Port Royal Sound, South Carolina. This is a scarce separate issue 1890 nautical chart or maritime map of the U.S. Minnesota - North Dakota - South Dakota.Massachusetts - Connecticut - Rhode Island.
